Puppy Linux has already been mentioned, and while I've never used it, I've heard very good things about it and feel comfortable pointing you in that direction. SliTaz would be another option--I've installed it on twelve-year-old single-core 23-bit laptops with 512MB of RAM, and it ran better than almost any other OS even on modern hardware (this is because SliTaz loads almost entirely into RAM at boot). But, be warned, SliTaz has some quirks, and because it's a completely homebrewed distro, it lacks a lot of software availability. E.g., getting OpenOffice and I think even FireFox (default browser is Midori) installed wasn't quite as easy as just installing through the package manager, at least not last time I checked. But, it should generally be super snappy and responsive (except for maybe loading webpages or anything dealing with I/O). The last option, in the absolute extreme of small distros, is Tiny Core.
